Enrollment is the beginning of educating people, shouldering the heavy responsibility of selecting talents for Buddhism, and it is an important foundation for cultivating talents at all levels of Buddhism, which is related to the development of Buddhism in China. Recently, 32 Chinese Buddhism colleges officially established with the approval of the former State Bureau of Religious Affairs have successively released enrollment information for 2020 and actively carried out enrollment work.
First, the basic situation of enrollment
In 2020, it has announced plans to enroll 2362 students. Among them, there are 1001 males and 1111 females, with 250 males and females. There are 1617 monks, 50 laymen at home, and 695 monks and nuns. The age requirement is between 18 and 45 years old, and the upper age limit of the lay training class is 55 years old. Minimum education requirements: junior high school education or preparatory school education in Buddhist colleges.
Second, the enrollment level, academic system and professional setting cover a wide range.
This plan enrolls graduate students, undergraduate students, junior college and junior college students, preparatory students, correspondence graduate students, correspondence undergraduate students and training students at six levels. The academic system is generally set up as a three-year postgraduate, a four-year undergraduate, a two-year junior college or a preparatory course. Wutai Mountain luminary buddhist institute recruits law training students; Zhejiang Buddhist College (headquarters) offers a training course for laymen. Provide further education opportunities for more monks who are interested in learning Buddhism and promoting Buddhism.
This enrollment major is more detailed. China Buddhist College divides undergraduate classes into two classes, focusing on the management of religious sects and monasteries and the cultivation of the ability to preach Buddhism. Hangzhou Buddhist College recruits students majoring in Buddhist music; Undergraduate students majoring in Tiantai Sect of Buddhism in Zhejiang Buddhist College (Female Ministry) and majoring in law; Caodong Buddhist College offers four majors: meditation, discipline, Buddhist health preservation and Buddhist art, with a total enrollment of 200 students. Hainan Buddhist College has set up the departments of Han Buddhism, management and Buddhist art, with the major of Han Buddhism. The management department has set up five majors: social work and charity management, Zen tea, Buddhist art and Buddhist music, and plans to recruit 100 students. Candidates can apply for majors according to their personal specialties and interests. Colleges and universities are more targeted and focused in curriculum setting, so as to train professionals for the development of Buddhism in various fields in China.
Third, the registration method and time schedule are relatively concentrated.
Colleges and universities take registration by mail, e-mail, online registration by scanning QR code and on-site registration. Individual colleges and universities have not mentioned the registration method, and candidates need to consult in detail when asking for the registration form. Most colleges and universities need to be certified and recommended by their Buddhist colleges, places of Buddhist activities and Buddhist associations when registering. Jiezhuang Buddhist Research Institute, Jiangsu luminary buddhist institute, Caodong Buddhist College and Hainan Buddhist College adopt paperless office mode, and only accept online registration or email registration. Tiantai Buddhism College of Zhejiang Buddhist College (male department) needs to bring relevant materials to the site for registration.
The deadline for registration is concentrated in the middle and late June to August.
The examination time is concentrated from July to September. Candidates have plenty of time to prepare registration materials and review for the exam. Individual Buddhist colleges plan to receive candidates to arrive at the colleges in advance to adapt to the environment and review the exams in a unified way. The spring semester enrollment of Hangzhou Buddhist College was carried out at the end of 2019. The exam was originally planned for March. Due to the epidemic, the exam time has been postponed. China Buddhist College Lingyanshan Branch and Zhejiang Buddhist College Tiantai Buddhism College (Women’s Department) have a late examination time, and the entrance examination is planned for October.
Fourth, the examination method is more comprehensive and systematic.
Buddhist colleges and universities will assess candidates by written examination and interview, and they are required to submit academic papers of 5000-8000 words written by themselves when applying for graduate students. Written subjects include: Buddhism, Chinese, policies and regulations, history, geography, English, etc. Interview subjects include: two-hour recitation, daily dignity, Buddhist literacy inspection and comprehensive ability evaluation. Colleges and universities have slightly different requirements for English proficiency. Some colleges and universities do not conduct English tests, while others only take English scores as reference items. Jian Zhen Buddhist College not only conducts English tests, but also conducts oral English tests during interviews. Some colleges and universities organize candidates to review intensively before the exam. For example, Nizhong College of Guangdong Buddhist College allows candidates to review and prepare for the exam one month in advance after receiving the admission ticket, and will inspect the front and comprehensively observe the candidates’ abilities and qualities in all aspects during the preparation period; Hainan Buddhist College set up an investigation on mental health and emotional management during the investigation. These examination arrangements make the selection and training of Buddhist talents more scientific and effective.
In terms of review content, many colleges and universities list bibliographies. The knowledge of Buddhism includes Questions and Answers of Buddhist Common Sense, Fundamentals of Buddhism, Basic Knowledge of Buddhism, Main Points of Buddhism, History of Indian Buddhism, History of China Buddhism, Introduction Manual of Buddhism, etc. Policies and regulations include Questions and Answers on Legal Knowledge of Religious Policies, Patriotism Education, Religious Policies and Regulations, and People’s Republic of China (PRC) Constitution. Chinese and geography are mainly recommended to refer to junior and senior high school textbooks. History includes junior and senior high school textbooks, Ancient History of China, Modern History of China, etc. In English, it is recommended to refer to the first and second volumes of New Concept English. Jiezhuang Buddhist Research Institute, Jiangsu Buddhist College (to be established) Ci ‘en College, Putuoshan College of China Buddhist College and Hangzhou Buddhist College provide review materials separately for candidates to prepare for the exam.
Five, make full use of modern information technology to widely publicize.
With the development of information technology, the release of enrollment information has gradually shifted from paper media to websites and WeChat platforms with richer content and more timely information. Colleges and universities seize the opportunity to organically combine enrollment work with college publicity by relying on the information platform, and add detailed college qualifications, school-running concepts, teachers and students’ treatment, pictures of school facilities, pictures of teaching activities, etc. to the enrollment information, so as to show the software strength and hardware strength of colleges and universities more intuitively. In this year’s enrollment work, China Buddhist College specially designed and produced enrollment posters to facilitate the dissemination of enrollment information and promote the new school buildings that will be put into use.
At present, the Buddhist community resolutely implements the central government’s deployment on epidemic prevention and control, and continues to vigorously support the cultivation of Buddhist talents while helping to fight the epidemic. It is believed that with the joint efforts of Buddhist associations at all levels and Buddhist colleges and universities, the enrollment of Chinese Buddhist colleges and universities in 2020 will be successfully completed according to the epidemic prevention and control situation and the requirements of higher authorities, while ensuring the safety of teachers and students’ lives and health.
